2012 Haskell Invitational Predictions, Post Positions & Betting Odds ...

Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey, will be the site once again for the 2012 Haskell Invitational. With just hours away from the first big race of the second half of the season, we will take a look at the Haskell Invitational betting odds, post positions and I will give you my predictions for this race.

The 2012 Haskell Invitational gets underway this Sunday, July 29th beginning at 6:17 PM ET and it?ll be broadcasted live on TVG (Direct TV channel 602). Full coverage for this event will commence at 5:30 PM ET and will continue all the way until the official start time of the race, which is 6:17 PM ET.

So, who do horse racing oddsmakers see winning the $1 million first-place prize over the 1 1/8-miles (9 furlongs) dirt track? The projected winner is none other than Belmont Stakes runner-up, Paynter [1/1].

It?s certainly worth noting that Bob Baffert was expecting to have Bodemeister kill the field for this event, not Paynter. Although Bodemeister would?ve been the favorite by a landslide, the Kentucky Derby/Preakness Stakes runner-up is not able to compete after coming down with a fever about two weeks out.

?Bodemeister will miss Haskell due to temperature yesterday,? texted Baffert a few weeks ago.

When asked about when we can expect to see the Arkansas derby winner, the Hall of Fame trainer simple replied: ?It depends on how much time I lose.?

Instead, we will have a 6-horse field that will consist of: Dullahan, Gemologist, Handsome Mike, Nonios, Paynter and Stealcase. Before you head out to the track, make sure and get your Haskell Invitational predictions right here!

A win for Paynter would be Baffert?s third straight Haskell Invitation victory and sixth overall. Ridden by jockey Rafael Bejarano, Paynter drew post position No.3 on Thursday.

?I'm just happy to have a horse fit enough to run, and be the favorite,? Baffert added.

One of the biggest threats to Baffert?s hat-trick attempt will be Dale Romans? Dullahan. With his notable wins coming at the Breeders' Futurity-G1 and at Blue Grass-G1, the son of Even The Score failed to win neither the Kentucky Derby nor the Preakness Stakes despite coming in with plenty of momentum and hype.

Dullahan finished third at Churchill Downs last May 5th and a disappointing seventh place a month later at the Belmont. This week, his trainer spoke about going up against Baffert?s second-best three-year-old colt in the first significant race since the Triple Crown.

?I am a huge fan of Paynter's,? Romans said. ?He's the horse to beat and will be out there running. We'll have to run him down.?

Without further ado, here are the Haskell Invitational betting odds, post positions, and finally my predictions (horse name -- jockey -- trainer):

1. Nonios -- C. Nakatani -- J. Hollendorfer: 7/2
2. Dullahan -- K. Desormeaux -- D. Romans: 3/1
3. Paynter -- R. Bejarano -- B. Baffert: 3/2
4. Gemologist -- J. Castellano -- T. Pletcher: 3/1
5. Handsome Mike -- M. Gutierrez -- D. O'Neill: 15/1
6. Stealcase -- S. Bridgmohan -- M. Casse: 8/1

OSH horse racing predictions: I actually like Todd Pletcher?s Gemologist to win this race. The son of Tiznow should bounce back after finishing last at the 2012 Kentucky Derby.
