Luke Richardson did plenty of good things on the ice as an NHL defenceman. What he did off the ice last year with the Binghamton Senators may have been his best performance of all.

The Senators rewarded Richardson, coach of their AHL affiliate, with a one-year contract extension Thursday, while also extending the deals of his assistants -- Steve Stirling and Matt Meacham -- through the 2014-15 season.

Richardson, 44, led an inexperienced Binghamton team to a 44-24-1-7 record in his rookie season as coach, finishing fourth in the AHL's Eastern Conference. He was named coach of the AHL Eastern Conference all-star team in 2012-13 after compiling the conference's best record at the all-star break. The B-Sens were knocked out of the playoffs, with three straight one-goal losses to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Prior to joining the B-Sens, Richardson spent three seasons as an assistant coach in Ottawa. A 20-year NHL veteran, Richardson had 35 goals and 166 assists with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Tampa Bay Lightning and Senators.

Stirling, 63, returns for his fourth season as an assistant coach after joining the team in 2010. Included on his resume was a season and a half as coach of the New York Islanders.

Meacham, 30, returns to Binghamton for his sixth season and first as assistant coach. Meacham was hired as the full-time video coach for the B-Sens prior to the 2008-09 season.
