Sydney Matzko of the Torrington High School softball team has been named the 2012-2013 Register Citizen Girls Athlete of the Year after a strong season. Matzko led the Red Raiders to a 23-1 record. Marianne Killackey/Special to Register Citizen
This season Sydney Matzko added more hardware to an already impressive career.
The junior ace for the Torrington Red Raiders went 23-1 with an earned run average of 0.27 and struck out 345 batters this season, leading the Red Raiders to the NVL regular season and tournament titles.
She was also named to the All-NVL, a coach?s all-state selection and was named as the NVL pitcher of the year.
Matzko and her teammates were the No. 1 seed in the Class Tournament before falling in the second round to No. 16 Bunnell.
Most would be content with such a successful season both for herself and for her team, but not Matzko.
?Looking at the season we developed a lot,? said Matzko, of her team who will return the entire team but one player. ?But we came up short.?
Red Raiders head coach Maryann Musselman, knows how important that Matzko is to the team?s success but not just by the number of strikeouts she racks up.
?She is key on the mound for us, she takes at least half of outs herself,? said Musselman. ?She leads by example; she has a really strong work ethic.?
Her work ethic isn?t just on the field; Matzko has a 4.0 grade point average in the classroom.
?I really wish I could tell you,? laughed Matzko. ?I work just as hard on the field as I do off the field.? Continued...
Musselman doesn?t know either.
?Everyone is born with gifts and talents,? she said. ?She was born with brains and a tenacious work ethic.?
With all the recognition for her efforts on the diamond, Matzko appreciates every single one of her teammates and what they mean to the team.
?She tells the team, she couldn?t do this without them,? said Musselman. ?She is very positive; she will say something positive to them, and however she will tell them what needs to be done.?
Matzko will be a senior next season and she already has verbally committed to continue her softball career at the University of North Carolina.
But before she moves on till Chapel Hill, Matzko wants to have a better senior season them a this past one.
?We have grown as a team,? she said. ?I am looking forward to having the core of the team back.?
The Red Raiders will be returning their entire team but one player, Baylee Vinisko, and the expectations will be just as high as they were this past season.
?Maybe we can go further next season,? she said.
But for right now Matzko is enjoying traveling and playing softball this summer with the Gulf Coast Hurricanes and is looking forward to her senior at school. Continued...
