Porn Sex vs. Real Sex, Illustrated With Food | FirstWeFeast.com

Food-as-sex isn?t the most original of extended metaphors, but food-as-sex-ed? Surprisingly effective. The good folks at KB Creative put their spare kitchen supplies to use, demonstrating the myriad differences between porn sex and real-world sex with cucumbers, avocados, and a very classy accent. Spoiler: porn isn?t very realistic!

Most of the factoids are pretty predictable?no, not all dudes are well-endowed and not all women are hairless?but stick it out to the end and you?ll find some strange stuff, helpfully illustrated with a trussed-up chicken. Click through for your daily dose of almost-literal food porn; you?ll never look at Nutella the same way again.

For Love of the Killion: The rest of May--catchup

This summer has been flying by! I think it feels shorter than past summers because Chris had a summer term class that lasted from May 20-June 11. It sure is nice to have him home for dinner and bedtime...until the end of August when school starts up again.

My sister Katie received her mission call and opened it on Mother's Day. She will be serving in the Washington Kennewick Mission, Spanish speaking! Katie will report to the Mexico City MTC on September 25.

We spent the week in Jersey after Katie opened her call. It was before all the shoobies came down, so the island was pretty peaceful. (Scary thought--I am now considered a shoobie...I don't live in NJ anymore ;D) We saw Julia play some softball; we were able to say goodbye to Becca Walker, who is currently Hermana Walker serving in Paraguay; we ladies went to Ashley Perez's baby shower; we had tons of fun all around!

Lizzie finished her spring soccer camp. Soccer Saturdays were so much fun and we loved them! Thank you to Coach Dave and Coach Meg for making it happen!

The Jensen family came to DC to see their sister's graduation, so we met up for the day after four long years apart. We had a great time catching up and seeing our sweet daughters interact with each other. Can't beat the National Zoo and Potbelly's :)

Cate fell asleep so she missed out on the final picture ;)

Uncle Bill and Sarah came to visit us for a few days. We love visitors :) They even treated us to an evening of Chuck E. Cheese!

We also went downtown to check out some places on the National Mall.

Pop-pop and Mimi came down to see us too. We spent some time in Fredericksburg checking out the Civil War sites.

To cap off the end of the month, my friend Katie and I threw Lois a baby shower! Katie graciously opened up her home to friends and family (and children!) for a fun luncheon to celebrate the new boy coming to the Heit family. We loved the idea of throwing mustaches on everything blue, green, and orange.

Here is Lois and me, post-shower. Thank you Lois for letting us celebrate on your behalf ;)

And there is our month of May. Here's to getting our summary of June up and running shortly!

Explosions at Florida gas plant 'probably human or equipment error'

Roads near a gas plant in Lake County were littered with twisted pieces of propane canisters early Tuesday, hours after explosions that injured at least eight people and forced the evacuation of residents up to a mile away.

Just before 7 a.m., Tavares Fire Chief Richard Keith told reporters on the scene that, "we don't think there was any act of sabotage or anything like that."

Instead, he said, the massive fire was likely due to an equipment or human error.

Firefighters and paramedics treated a total of nine patients late Monday and into Tuesday morning. Five of those are in critical condition, according to Jerry Smith, Lake Emergency Medical Services interim executive director, who briefed commissioners mid-Tuesday morning.

One of those patients treated was not on staff at the plant but was treated for smoke inhalation.

Workers at the Blue Rhino plant take old propane cylinders, clean them, refurbish them, fill them and then package the tanks for shipping.

As of Monday, there were about 53,000 20-pound propane tanks on site.

The fire came from those canisters, most of which ignited in the blaze. Due to the intensity of the flames, Keith said, firefighters had to let it burn itself out to some degree.

The three bulk tanks on the property ? which hold 90,000 pounds of propane ? did not ignite in the fire, he said.

"The fact that those things didn't explode, that's the reason I go to church on Sunday," said Eric Wages, the battalion chief for the Tavares Fire station closest to the Blue Rhino plant.

One of those massive tanks had a black smudge, a sign it was hit by a flying 20-pound tank.

Blue Rhino is a subsidiary of Overland Park, Kansas-based Ferrellgas.

"We know very little so far. It's very early, it's very preliminary," said Ferrellgas spokesman Scott Brockelmeyer.

"We applaud the quick response of the emergency responders last night. We're going to pledge our full support to them this morning as they begin to conduct their investigation."

Residents evacuated as fire crews respond

About 24 workers were in the main building on County Road 448 when the first explosion erupted in another area shortly before 11 p.m., said Sheriff's Office Lt. John Herrell.

The plant runs in two shifts, and workers on the second shift were on when the blaze ignited. Some of the employees were hired through a staffing agency, which declined to comment.

Keith said officials, "spent a good part of our night actually searching for employees."

Some witnesses thought it was fireworks at first. Others thought the sight of flames in the distance was a downed airplane.

Wages, the Tavares battalion chief, said the first blast knocked firefighters' radios off their chairs.

Google Chromecast Exploit Found and Used by Hackers

Like many other new devices that are being released nowadays, Google?s Chromecast has already been rooted.

It was less than a week ago that the name Chromecast first appeared on the Internet, and hackers have already found a way to gain root access to the hardware.

There?s an exploit package online that erases the existing system partition and installs a new system image.

While GTVHacker notes that the current exploit is unlikely to come to use for regular people, it creates a foundation that allows researchers to investigate the environment.

Developers will also get a chance to build and test software on their Chromecasts. This basically means that we could get custom apps for the device quite soon.

They have also learned that Chromecast runs a modified version of a Google TV release and not an offshoot version of ChromeOS.

The Robots Are Coming (To Mow Your Lawn)

For some people, mowing the lawn is a meditative experience?a chance to tune out while getting a little exercise walking behind the lawnmower, inhaling the scent of freshly cut grass. It's good old-fashioned domestic man's work, like your father did before you, his father before him, and so on. Well, not me. I hate mowing the lawn. It's a numbingly repetitive, sweaty, noisy waste of time. My father hated it too. And I'm pretty sure his dad did before him.

Tell you what I do like, though: robots?love 'em! In fact, I would gleefully surrender every thankless bit of home landscaping to an automaton. So I decided to see if I could piece together a system wherein my lawn essentially would take care of itself. Yes, I could have hired a landscaping crew, but to me that was a dodge. I didn't want to pass off my dirty work to someone else. That's the beauty of robots?one day they may take over the world, but for now, they get the grunt work.

And, it's worth mentioning, I wanted a beautiful lawn?green, lush, carpetlike?something my family and I could really roll around on during a midsummer day. I just didn't want to sweat for it. The good news is that, for mowing, there's already a robot solution?a couple of them, in fact. Honda sells the Miimo; a company called LawnBott offers a variety of, well, lawn bots; and Friendly Robotics has a bunch of really friendly looking mowing robots. All of these systems seem pretty similar and promise essentially the same thing: to tame your turf with a minimum of human oversight.

I called up Husqvarna, a company with a long history in the grasscutting biz. Husqvarna also has deep experience with robotic lawnmowers; it introduced the first consumer model in 1995. Now it sells two: the Automower 230 ACX ($2700) and the Automower 265 ACX ($3700). A few weeks after my call, I got a big box with a 265 ACX and an appointment with company representatives Quinn Derby and Gent Simmons. They arrived a few days later, surveyed my postage-stamp-size lawn, looked at the box from their company, and concluded that the 265 was complete overkill. But the machine was there, so they decided to install it anyway.

Now, two animal analogies are useful for understanding the operation of the Automower. First, the machine works like a sheep, roaming about your lawn at random, nibbling away at the blades of grass in small increments. Second, the Automower is prevented from leaving your lawn in much the same way that a dog can be contained within an electric fence. That's what Derby and Simmons installed on my lawn?a fence for the robot. They laid down a low-voltage wire that creates a mild electromagnetic field so the robot can sense when it has reached the prescribed boundary, then back up, turn randomly, and proceed off in another direction.

Derby informed me that my lawn was an unusual one for the Automower. That's because I really have two lawns: a small one in the front of the house, and a larger one in the back, separated by a fence and a patio. I could tell that Derby is by nature a problem solver, as he described several ways he could attempt to string the wire to allow the robot to travel from my back lawn to the front lawn. But I imagined the poor, confused machine attempting to nudge aside patio furniture along the way, and I told Derby to fence them off separately?occasionally I'd just pick the thing up and move it to the front lawn myself.

The two men installed the perimeter wire and base station and then gave me some brief advice on programming the mower?1 hour, for four days a week, would keep the back lawn neat and tidy; 11/2 hours once a week would handle the front.

Paul Daley Expresses Desire to Return to the UFC, UFC President Dana White Expresses Doubts

Paul Daley Expresses Desire to Return to the UFC, UFC President Dana White Expresses Doubts
Posted by Jeffrey Harris?on 07.29.2013

Daley has softened his stance...

After he was released from his Bellator MMA contract, MMA fighter Paul Daley posted on his Facebook account that he'd be open to returning to the UFC.

Daley wrote, "Given the opportunity Dana, I would be right back in there, please just send me that contract." Daley was released from the promotion in May 2010. Following a unanimous decision loss to Josh Koscheck at UFC 113, Daley sucker punched Koscheck after the fight out of anger and frustration. The move and his reaction in the cage toward White got him quickly cut from the roster.

When White was asked about Paul Daley during a post-fight media scrum following UFC on Fox 8, he expressed doubts toward a potential return to the Octagon for Daley. White stated: "I heard he couldn't get a visa. And they're real strict here now on visas. I thought he hated the UFC and said he'd never want to come back here and never wanted to fight here again. What changed?"

Daley has mostly been fighting overseas since he lost his last fight in Strikeforce to Kazuo Misaki and has won his last four fights.

So I played the Phase 3 of the Final Fantasy XIV beta a little while back and absolutely loved it. Was never really much of an MMO kind of gamer first off. Never really got into WoW (got to maybe level 20 and quit) And I gave Final Fantasy XI a chance (twice), perhaps the most I've ever contributed to an MMORPG was Star Wars the Old Republic. That said Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn is by far the coolest, exciting, gamer friendly MMO I've ever played.
The visuals are amazing, the quest are enjoyable, and the crafting is like a fun little mini game. Anyway I guess I'm saying all this cause I am so excited for this game launching next month that I've preordered it to get on the game immediately after the final beta next month (which anybody can join), and if any of you are interested would love to quest with you all. Anyway hit me up if you consider joining the FFXIV experience.

25 Youngest Teams in College Football

Youth plays a large part in a lot of sports today. College football is not exactly one of them. When it comes to the 25 youngest teams in the country, there are squads of various talent levels.

In a lot of other sports, such as college basketball, the younger teams are generally near the top of the country. That is not necessarily the case when it comes to college football.

It oftentimes takes a player a few years to develop physically in order to compete at a high level.

With that being said, the oldest teams are not always the best. Georgia State is the newest FBS member and also has some of the most experience with 14 seniors and five sophomores starting. Florida Atlantic has 16 senior starters, and South Alabama has 15 seniors and seven sophomores starting.?

There are a lot of ways to go about finding the youngest teams in the country for this upcoming college football season.

The following list is based on starters only. Freshman starters are given one point, sophomore starters are given two, junior starters three and senior starters four. The team with the lowest point total is at the top of this list.

There are teams from all over the country, but very few squads have more underclassmen starting than upperclassmen.

Do some of the top teams in the country make the list, or is it a bunch of no-name schools?

Read on to find out.

*Special teams are not included.

*Depth charts are according to Scout.com.

O2 Germany dumps BlackBerry for Windows Phone

A few weeks ago, mobile network giant Telef?nica revealed a strategic one-year partnership with Microsoft to help boost Windows Phone sales on its carriers in several key markets. Then, earlier this month, as Nokia was announcing its new flagship Windows Phone, the 41-megapixel Lumia 1020, it emerged that Telef?nica will have the global exclusive on the 64GB version of that handset, with all other operators being stuck with the 32GB model.

As if to further highlight the confidence that the company has in Windows Phone, it?s now beginning the process of deploying WP8 handsets to its staff. Documentation revealed to WMPowerUser shows that O2 Germany is ditching BlackBerry devices for its employees, replacing them with Windows Phones instead. Store managers and above will receive a Nokia Lumia 925; everyone else gets a Lumia 520.

There were two key factors behind the decision. The first was cost; Telef?nica Germany?s Mario Buchner said that over the next year, the company will be ?saving more than a quarter of million euros ($332m USD / ?216m GBP) due to the elimination of BlackBerry?.

The second factor was the compatibility and interoperability within the Microsoft ecosystem. O2?s Alexander Hoffman said: ?The integration of Windows products in our system landscape is very simple. This is reflected in the smooth synchronization of Calendar entries and emails, but also the unrestricted access to all Office applications? The widely known problems in representing and editing Office documents with iOS and Android devices does not exist with Windows Phone.??

According to WMPowerUser, Telef?nica is expected to reveal similar plans for its carriers elsewhere in Europe and Latin America. The news will be another unwelcome blow to BlackBerry, which recently reported underwhelming sales of its next-generation handsets - the latest in a series of woes for the company, which has now lost its third-place spot in the smartphone ecosystem war to Microsoft.

Washington show more than scratches surface of prints

Two words: Walton Ford. To be sure, the Washington Art Association's "On the Surface, Below the Surface" exhibit, one of its most gripping, offers plenty of enticements. But it is Walton Ford's scintillating works that will leave you breathless. "On the Surface" is strictly a print show, of which we've been seeing more lately. This time, the printer in question is New Hampshire's Wingate Studio, one of the premiere print workshops and publishers in the region.

Wingate founder Peter Pettengill has assembled a slew of luminaries, including a few represented here ? Sol Lewit, Charles Cajori, Ambreem Butt, Richard Ryan and John Walker, over the last 30 years.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 May Be Coming In 3 Size Variants

samsung galaxy note 3We?ve been hearing rumours start to heat up regarding the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and as the time approaches where we expect the Note 2?s phablet successor to be announced (popularly accepted to be IFA 2013 in September), we?re getting wind of more and more rumours that suggest the Note 3 may be coming to us in several variants.

We?ve heard rumours that the Note 3 would be coming in display-type variants, i.e. an AMOLED or a LCD display, but today, its been discovered from some shipping records that the Note 3 might actually be coming to us in 3 screen-size variants. This doesn?t rule out the display-type variations as well (or having these variations included within the different screen sizes), however this is the first we?ve heard of 3 distinct variants for the Note 3.

I?m sure many of us had been expecting a 5.7- or 6.0-inch Note 3, but according to Zauba?s manifests, the Note 3 will be coming in a 5.5-, 5.7- and a 6.0-inch variant. Sound familiar? This is a very similar strategy employed on the Galaxy Mega phones and perhaps there has been success in this strategy which is giving Samsung confidence to do it again with the Note 3. Another thing to consider if these screen sizes will influence the type of hardware in the devices as it also did with the Galaxy Mega phones. One way or another, hopefully we?ll find out the truth in Berlin later this year.

Do you think the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is really going to come in 3 screen-size variants? Which would you get if this were the case? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Sony Xperia i1 Honami visits FCC, October launch confirmed

The appearance of the Sony Xperia i1 Honami at the FCC has confirmed that the smartphone is scheduled for a launch sometime in October, though no other details can be gleaned from the filing owing to Sony?s request to keep everything a secret.

honami-view

Sony?s Honami just can?t help but peek out to say hello to us every now and then, which has gotten us a complete look at its camera features and allegedly its design as well in multiple leaks in the past. Now, the Honami has appeared in an FCC filing, and Sony?s ?confidentiality? request to the certification agency has finally given us a time frame for the CyberShot camera-toting smartphone?s release.

The FCC report pretty much confirms an October launch of the device, as Sony has requested that all details of the Honami remain a secret before ?2013-09-30,? after which the ?formal market launch? will take place. The FCC has naturally fulfilled said request given how except for a software version mentioning ?honami?, no photos or hardware details are available for snooping eyes (though it does reveal that the device is capable of handling?GSM, UMTS, LTE, 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0 EDR), but hey, at least we know when we can expect to be able to get one for ourselves.

sony_honami_fcc_filing

The Honami is expected to sport a 20-megapixel camera with Sony?s G Lens and Bionz image processor for superior image quality, 5-inch 1080p?Triluminos Opticontrast display, the beastly Snapdragon 800 chipset accompanied by 2GB of RAM, IP 55/57 water- and dust-protection, a 3,000mAh battery to provide the juice for the dazzling hardware, and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with a new and improved Sony UI.

Fox says Parkinson's won't be focus of NBC comedy

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Michael J. Fox says Parkinson's disease will not be a major storyline of his upcoming NBC comedy.

On "The Michael J. Fox Show," the actor plays Mike Henry, a former local NBC newscaster with Parkinson's, who left the business to spend more time with his family. The series begins when he decides to return to work now that his kids are older.

At Saturday's Television Critics Association summer press tour, Fox said he didn't think about how others with Parkinson's would react to the show because he doesn't "vet creative instinct."

"I just go with it," he said. "I feel that this is the reflection of my experience and certainly in the pilot it was more prevalent than it is in subsequent scripts. The way I look at life and the reality of Parkinson's, sometimes it's frustrating and sometimes it's funny. I need to look at it that way and other people need to look at it that way. Beyond that we all got our own bag of hammers...I think people will look at that and say, 'Yeah, I need to laugh at my own stuff, too.'"

The premise of the show does have similarities to Fox's real-life story. The actor left "Spin City" in 2000 as he tried different treatments and medications to treat Parkinson's. He also used the opportunity to spend quality time with his four kids during their formative years.

"There's kind of a scrutiny of their stuff that won't exist if I'm being occupied by something else," joked Fox of the distraction of a full-time job.

Fox believes the viewers, however, will not be distracted by his character having Parkinson's on his new series.

"Parkinson's itself there's nothing horrifying to me. It's not horrible. I don't think it's gothic nastiness. There's nothing on the surface horrible about someone with shaking hands."

Since leaving "Spin City," Fox has had recurring roles on shows like "Rescue Me" and "The Good Wife." Those guest spots gave him the itch to do more.

"It really brought me to a place of, 'This is what I do,'" he said. "This is what I was built and programmed to do, and so I wanted to do it. It's what I've loved to do...I thought, 'Why can't I? There's no reason not to do it.'"

Because Fox plays a local NBC newscaster, the show will tap real people to do guest appearances that make the story more believable. Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie are in the pilot. New Jersey governor Chris Christie will appear in an episode as himself.

"A fictional television network didn't give us 22 episodes," Will Gluck, executive producer, said jokingly on why they decided to make Fox's Mike Henry work for NBC.

The Michael J. Fox Show" premieres Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. EST/PST.

Nevada's Burning Man fest gets OK for larger crowd

RENO, Nev. (AP) ? The largest outdoor arts festival in North America is about to become bigger.

Federal land managers have issued Burning Man organizers a four-year special recreation permit that allows a peak population of 68,000 on the northern Nevada desert this year.

Last year, attendance at the offbeat art and music festival on the Black Rock Desert peaked at some 53,000 ? well below the previous maximum allowable population of 60,900.

The festival will be held Aug. 26-Sept. 2.

Gene Seidlitz, manager of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's Winnemucca District, said the agency is requiring organizers to comply with more than 60 conditions related to issues such as security, public safety, resource management and cleanup.

He said he's confident that sufficient requirements are in place to protect the starkly beautiful desert's environment and to ensure public safety.

"Our priorities in managing this permit continue to be the protection and conservation of natural and cultural resources, as well as the safety for all participants and staffs," Seidlitz said. "I feel confident the permit addresses these priorities."

Burning Man spokeswoman Megan Miller hailed the BLM's issuance of the multi-year permit, saying organizers are establishing the first shuttle bus service to the event and making other improvements to Black Rock City's infrastructure to prepare for larger crowds.

During the annual weeklong event leading up to Labor Day, the temporary city on the desert about 100 miles north of Reno is one of Nevada's largest.

"We have always been confident in our ability to grow the event safely and sustainably and have been asking the BLM for this increase for several years," Miller said by email. "We have always had a safe and engaging event and look forward to another great event on the playa this year."

The gathering, which draws people from around the world, is the largest permitted event on federal land in the United States.

After it moved from San Francisco's Baker Beach, the inaugural Burning Man in Nevada drew some 80 people in 1990. The first 1,000-plus crowd was in 1993, and attendance doubled each of the next three years before reaching 23,000 in 1999. The crowd was capped at 50,000 under a five-year permit that expired in 2010, and has hovered around 53,000 since then. The new multi-year permit allows a maximum crowd of 70,000, but organizers applied for a cap of 68,000 this year.

The BLM issued a notice of non-compliance to organizers for exceeding the attendance cap of 50,000 at the 2011 festival, which drew crowds of more than 53,000 on two different days. It was the first time Burning Man had been placed on probation since moving to Nevada. The BLM had warned that if organizers were placed on probation two straight years, the agency might suspend or cancel their permit.

"It's important to note that we may not reach the maximum allowable population (this year)," Miller said. "We don't want to exceed the maximum so we are planning accordingly."

Seidlitz praised organizers' overall efforts in meeting terms and conditions of past permits. Organizers have always met stringent cleanup standards, he said, adding that the gathering pumps millions into Nevada's economy.

Gay man claims attack after wedding talk

SAN DIEGO - A newly married gay couple says a night of celebrating ended with violence after they told a man about their marriage.

"He was with his wife and they seemed like a nice couple, so we struck up a conversation," said Zach.

With his wedding band on his finger, Zach talked to 10News about the couple he and his husband Shawn met on a Saturday afternoon two weeks ago at the bar Club Kensington. ?

Zach said the man, in his 60s, along with his wife, initially congratulated them on their week-old marriage and invited them to dinner.

After a few drinks, Zach and Shawn offered to cook them dinner at their home just around the corner.

At the house, Zach said after 20 minutes, Shawn and the man's wife went outside for a smoke. Zach said he was talking sports when suddenly the tone changed.

"He looked at me and said, 'I hate f******. Next thing you know, he hit me upside the head," said Zach.

Zach said photos of deep bruises throughout his body reveal what happened next.

He said he blacked out, but then woke up to a beating of 4 to 5 minutes filled with gay slurs. Zach said the man broke wine glasses on his head.

Shawn heard the commotion and came running in and saw his husband.

"He was curled up on the floor and being kicked," said Shawn.

Shawn said the man also hurled glasses and slurs at him before the police were called. ?

Zach suffered cuts and bruises, but the man was not arrested.

Police said Zach initially said he didn't want to press charges. He said he doesn't remember saying that, but now wants the case prosecuted.

Police told 10News they will be referring the case to the City Attorney's Office for possible misdemeanor battery charges. It's unclear whether a hate crime enhancer might be added.

Dan Gilleon, the couple's attorney, said a civil suit alleging a hate crime will also be filed. Gilleon said the alleged attacker was interviewed by his investigator.

"He calls them perverts and shows a bias against homosexuals. He also said my client tried to molest him, but when we asked him what Zach specifically did, he couldn't remember," said Gilleon.

10News reporter Michael Chen asked Zach, "Did you do or say anything to provoke him?"

"Absolutely not," Zach replied.

"I don't think anybody should be beat in their own homes and called f*****. It's a hate crime," said Shawn.

Gilleon said he also found out the man had just learned his wife wanted a divorce and may have been lashing out at a happily married couple.

'A cast of characters': Prosecution rests its case in Whitey Bulger trial

Margaret Small / AP file

This courtroom sketch depicts James "Whitey" Bulger at the beginning of jury selection for his trial in U.S. District Court in Boston, on June 4. Bulger faces a long list of crimes, including playing a role in 19 killings.

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

The prosecution rested in the trial of James ?Whitey? Bulger on Friday after seven weeks of testimony from the former head of the Winter Hill Gang?s ex-compatriots and alleged victims.

The defense for Bulger, 83, could begin to present its case as early as Monday at a federal courthouse in Boston, and is set to call up to 16 witnesses.

Bulger is accused of terrorizing South Boston for decades before spending 16 years on the run, evading FBI agents until he was arrested in Santa Monica, Calif., in 2011. He is on trial on federal charges of racketeering and the murder of 19 people.

The prosecution's witness list was peppered with alleged victims of Bulger's extortion and strong-arming and a host of confederates with gangland nicknames such as "The Rifleman" and "The Executioner." The trial so far has been full of witness-stand revelations and sometimes inconsistent testimony, said Chris Dearborn, a professor at Suffolk University, all of which the defense will likely try to pick apart in the coming week.

?This has been quite a cast of characters,? Dearborn said.

The defense is expected to take far less time than the prosecution in presenting their case, said Gerard T. Leone, a former prosecutor and partner at Nixon Peabody.

?I think they?re going to continue to try to develop their three themes that they opened with, which is Number One, that Whitey Bulger is not an informant; Number Two, that he was provided with some type of immunity; and Three, that he did not kill the females,? Leone said.

That will include attempting to chip away at the credibility of three former Bulger associates and star government witnesses: Stephen ?The Rifleman? Flemmi, John ?The Executioner? Martorano and Kevin Weeks.

?You?ve got to hammer the big three witnesses. You have to hammer those because they?re the most damaging in some respects,? Leone said.

On Thursday, Flemmi wound up nearly a week of testimony. Flemmi, who is serving a life sentence for 10 murders, recounted details of several killings that Bulger was allegedly involved in, and on Tuesday accused his former boss of having a relationship with a 16-year-old girl who he took to Mexico.

"You want to talk about pedophilia, right over there at that table," Flemmi said while pointing at Bulger, according to Reuters.

Another witness, Richard Buccheri, told the court on Thursday that Bulger threatened him with a shotgun in the 1980s, one of several tales of alleged extortion in the course of the trial.

?He slammed the table. Then he takes a shotgun that was on the table and sticks it in my mouth,? Buccheri said, according to Reuters. ?He said he wanted 200 ? he meant $200 thousand.?

Buccheri, a real estate developer, testified that Bulger then pulled the shotgun from his mouth and pressed a handgun against his head.

?He said, ?If you don?t pay me in 30 days I?m going to kill you and your family,?? Buccheri testified. ?I agreed to pay.?

Bulger has pleaded not guilty to a federal indictment that includes 19 murders, among other crimes. Prosecutors have said that Bulger was an FBI informant, an accusation that the aging gangster has vehemently denied.

His defense team did its best to attack Flemmi?s credibility on cross examination. Attorney Henry Brennan asked Flemmi whether he expected a reduced sentence for his sometimes gory testimony, which included an account of the strangling death of Deborah Hussey.

?I don?t know what the future holds,? Flemmi responded, according to Reuters. ?Everybody hopes that at some point in the future something beneficial will happen to him. I?m still alive and that?s the hope.?

The big remaining question, Leone said, is whether Bulger himself will take the stand ? something he might be tempted to do to salvage whatever might remain of his tough-guy legacy in the neighborhood he once ruled.

?Martorano, Weeks, and especially Flemmi, they really in some ways, it?s not a legal onus, but they?ve put the messaging onus back on Bulger,? Leone said.

NBC News? Tracy Connor and Reuters contributed to this report.

'Sleepy' Pallazola Memorial bowling night to be held Aug. 16 to raise money for Fiesta sports

The late Carlo ?Sleepy? Pallazola earned many championship flags during the St. Peter?s Fiesta sporting events.

Two Greasy Pole flags in 1956. Multiple American flags as scuttler and rower for men?s seine boat champion crews in a rowing career that spanned six decades and ended at age 66.

On Sunday, June 30, Sleepy earned his very last flag, one that perhaps best identifies the respect he earned from those involved in the four-day city festival that honors the patron saint of fishermen.

Now, Pallazola will forever be honored with a memorial fund in his name. Money will be raised for Fiesta sports, as well as youth sports, on Aug. 16.
?
?

His last flag

It was ?Champions Day? for the Greasy Pole competition, some 57 years after Sleepy won his two titles. The day before, Saturday, June 29, Sleepy died at age 76 after lifelong illnesses. He was surrounded in his home by his large Sicilian family.

Nicky Avelis, a family friend and Greasy Pole champ, visited Sleepy earlier that day, promised him he?d win the Sunday competition, and then took Sleepy?s 1956 champion flag to have it signed by past champions before he returned it to Sleepy?s family.

?Nicky told me to bring the flag to the beach and hold it,? Sleepy?s daughter Janelle said. ??When I win the pole I am handing you my flag like I promised Sleepy,? Nicky said.?

Avelis won, handed the new flag to Janelle like he promised on Pavilion Beach, and took back Sleepy?s 1956 flag remade by local artist Marty Behsman. Avelis carried it around for a few moments before the two exchanged flags once again.

?It was like a storybook unfolding,? Janelle later recalled. ?It was unbelievable. Just like he promised.?

Friends and family say Sleepy was a dedicated father, hard-working fisherman and incredibly humble Fiesta champion and ?legend? who kept the annual celebration near and dear to his heart since growing up in its backyard at 53 Fort Square ? where the city?s earliest Sicilian immigrants settled in the early 20th century.

?Sleepy was a man that was all about tradition and family and was proud to come from a fishing family and to have been a fisherman himself,? said Tom Brancaleone, Fiesta sporting-event announcer. ?He wanted the Italian community to be represented well during the year as well as our annual feast. A fisherman?s patron saint is honored, and everyone respects the true meaning.?
?

Genuine respect

Deeply revered down St. Peter?s Square, a seine boat crew in 2005 named itself ?Sleepy?s Heavy Artillery? two years after he retired at 66. They won.

Another crew that didn?t win was called ?Sleepy?s Gang.? Sleepy was buried with his Raging Bulls champion jacket.

That seine boat crew won in 1987, 1988 and 1989. Another family friend, Stephen Goulart, who walked the Greasy Pole in Sleepy?s honor, put a piece of wood from the Greasy Pole inside his casket.

In retirement, Sleepy was a ubiquitous presence around the St. Peter?s Club, the downtown staple and Fiesta central. Each time Greasy Pole walkers had an informal reunion or gathering, Sleepy was involved, captured through countless images of young walkers surrounding the old veteran down Pavilion Beach.

The day of his funeral earlier this month, a downtown convenience store said, ?Closed for Sleepy?s funeral.?

?He was so well respected,? Janelle said. ?People would want to take pictures with him. He always said he did it for heart and tradition. He never dressed up or anything like that for the Greasy Pole ? not that he thought there was something wrong with it.?
?

?Deity status?

Gloucester?s James Tarantino, who rowed with Sleepy, was one those who had a deep respect for Sleepy, calling him a ?Fiesta Legend.?

?Growing up down the Fort, that made him deity status in my eyes,? Tarantino said. ?As children swimming at Pavilion Beach, we would paddle our inflatable floats with our arms pretending to be the ?Arizona Sleepers? in the seine boat races.

?When I actually got the opportunity to row for Sleepy with the Raging Bulls (87, 88, 89 champs), he always glowed with quiet dignity,? Tarantino said. ?I was the loudmouth, but we shared something special. We became very close because we both had a deep love and pride for our family traditions and Fiesta in particular. Sleepy was so proud of all of us. He made us better because his pride was contagious. You didn?t want to let him down.?

Tarantino visited Sleepy as he was under hospice care the day he passed ? shortly before Tarantino was to row for Kaos in the men?s seine boat semifinals.

?His daughters told me not to be disappointed because he wouldn?t be responsive,? Tarantino said. ?They weren?t sure if he could hear me. When I went in and told him, ?You?ll be with me in that seine boat today, Sleepy,? he must?ve thought I meant I wanted him there physically. He sat up and started talking to me. I couldn?t make out what he was saying, but I was so moved I promised him a victory.?

Two boats ahead during that race at the quarter-mile halfway point, Tarantino yelled out, ?Thank you, Sleepy!? Kaos won that race, and then won its unprecedented sixth overall title the next day.
?

Special connection with daughter

Sleepy?s daughter, Leeanne, is a multiple Fiesta rowing champion and one of the few original women?s rowers still rowing today nearly 20 years later.

Pallazola, who now lives in Colorado, remembers when she was 9 watching from the Fort playground when her father rowed with Arizona Linquata on that ?Arizona Sleepers? crew.

She told her mother, the late Joan, who died one year ago Friday, July 26, that she was going to be an ?Arizona Sleeper? rower someday. She ended up rowing with her father in 2001, the first year original mid-90s dynasty Affirmative Active was separated. She finished third.

?But in my heart it was and will always be the best race,? Pallazola said. ?His health started to decline in ?02, and I knew I got my one and only dream race. He had always been on the beach since then cheering.?

As his daughter?s crew?s scuttler ? or boat-steerer ? Sleepy never lost his competitiveness even though the crew was losing.

?From atop the stern I remembering him screaming, ?Don?t give up. Don?t give up. Never give up,?? Leeanne said. ?He always used to say on the Friday of Fiesta, wherever he was or whoever he was with, ?I gotta go, my kid is rowing.? The pride in his smile will be with me always. That is better than any trophy. Isn?t that what Fiesta is all about??

Sleepy?s strength and humility in Fiesta circles are qualities he carried into his life the other 361 days of the year. He had to be strong, raising four daughters (Carla, Leeanne, Janelle, Jaime) with wife Joan and at the same time undergoing five open-heart surgeries and two strokes.

But he fought his lifelong ailments gracefully, believing in his doctors and willing himself year after year, Janelle said.

?He fought until the end and never complained,? Janelle said. ?Whatever the doctor told him, he?d just say, ?OK, let?s do it.??

Sleepy was a commercial fisherman on the Gloucester boats Serafina N. and Rockaway, then went on to work for Gorton?s of Gloucester. He loved to cook the big Sunday family pasta dinners and all kinds of fish. And he loved watching his grandchildren play sports around town.

No meal, however, could make Sleepy as happy as he was with family and friends around the Fiesta in June. In his final moments in his home last month, daughter Leeanne had a message for her father:

?Dad, you can go now. Just reach for the flag.?

Seconds later, Sleepy took his last breath. The next day, he earned his final Fiesta flag from the Sunday Greasy Pole champion.

Austin Dillon wins on dirt at Eldora

ROSSBURG, Ohio (AP) ? Austin Dillon grabbed the golden shovel and scooped a pile of dirt.

His dirty work over, Dillon dumped the black clump in a small jar, a nice souvenir for a victory four decades in the making.

Dillon left the rest of the field in his dust to win NASCAR's return to dirt racing in the Truck Series races at Eldora Speedway.

He pulled away in the green-white-checkered finish Wednesday night to complete a thrilling return to the muck of the clumpy dirt track.

"This is real racing right here," said Dillon, a regular in the Nationwide Series who won for the fifth time in 53 career Truck starts.

The last time one of NASCAR's top touring series competed on dirt was Sept. 30, 1970, when Richard Petty won a Sprint Cup ? called the Grand National Division at that time ? race at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.

That drought ended with racing that started early in the day and bled into late night at the Tony Stewart-owned half-mile track.

Dillon was joined by his father, Mike, and his grandfather, owner Richard Childress, for the victory celebration.

"The coolest thing is, you're out of control out there for a few laps," Austin said. "You're on the edge for every lap."

NASCAR returned to dirt in an attempt to reconnect with its roots and give fans raised on asphalt and stock cars a taste of the slides and wall-banging that are staples of the surface.

Looks like NASCAR will have to come back.

Fans absolutely packed the track that opened in 1954, a rare feat for a series that often runs in front of mostly empty grandstands as a support race in a Sprint Cup weekend. About 20,000 fans spread out on the grassy hills or creaky wooden bleachers; most seats with a hand-painted number.

They camped out along the street entering the track and turned Eldora into the site of Ohio's biggest party.

Not bad considering rural Rossburg had a population of 201 in the 2010 census.

If fans weren't chugging beers, they sipped the track's signature drink, Toilet Water. Just some vodka, with orange juice and 7-Up. Oh, and a Tootsie Roll plopped in the yellowish concoction for fun.

They got quite a show. The trucks drove four wide in a parade lap. Then they skidded and slid around the track, mashed and bashed against the wall and doors, living up to the hype of one of the most anticipated races of the season in any NASCAR series.

Kyle Larson was second, Ryan Newman third, Joey Coulter fourth and Brendan Gaughan fifth. Darrell Wallace Jr. finished seventh.

"If I can get the dirt out of my eyes, I'll be all right," Wallace said, rubbing his eyes at the podium.

Stewart, a three-time Cup champion, was on hand to take care of every last detail of the track he bought in 2004. Reigning Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski and Clint Bowyer also were on hand. Cup drivers Newman and Dave Blaney were in the 30-truck field.

"I think our sport really needed something different," Newman said. "I think it's a monumental day. It's something special. It's over tonight, but hopefully it happens again."

Will it?

"How far that goes, we'll have to wait and see," NASCAR President Mike Helton told Speed. "I think that's what makes tonight very special, the fact that it is a combination of Wednesday night racing, on a dirt track, which has been a long-time coming from a lot of our fans who requested it. So, tonight is very unique, and that's what makes it special. What the future holds? We'll see."

There sure seemed to be more excitement for the Truck Series race than the Cup stop Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Leave Indy, get off the highway, and there's nothing but farmland, corn, a small town that could be mistaken for Mayberry ? and then, Eldora.

Keselowski said on TV "there was more energy than for a Cup race."

The track issued 130 media credentials and boasted that tickets were purchased from 48 of the 50 states.

Eldora hosts some of the largest dirt racing events in the country, including the Dream, Kings Royal, and World 100.

Qualifying was pulled out of the dirt racing playbook. There were five, eight-lap qualifying events and a 15-lap last-chance race to come up with the 30 competitors (regularly 36 in the series) for the 150-lap Mudsummer Classic. The feature race was broken into three segments of 60, 50 and 40 laps.

Norm Benning rode the wall in the last-chance race to become the final driver in the field. But his No. 57 Chevrolet looked as if it went through 150 laps, not 15, with the exhaust pipes dragging along the dirt.

The 61-year-old Benning flipped the middle finger to Clay Greenfield after their trucks connected on the final lap.

It was a good race for older drivers. Ken Schrader became the oldest pole winner in a NASCAR series. The 58-year-old Schrader won the pole and a qualifying heat race. Dick Trickle was 57 years old when he won the pole for the June 1999 Nationwide Series race at Dover.

The trucks weren't built to race on dirt, so some adjustments were needed.

The Goodyear dirt tire was widened from 10 to 11 inches to provide a larger contact patch with the track and give the trucks more grip. While the Eldora right-side tire basically remained the same height as a NASCAR tire run on asphalt tracks, the left-side was 3 inches shorter (85.8 inches) to build in more stagger, which helped the trucks turn better.

The trucks were fitted for mesh shields and hood deflectors to hold off debris kicked up from the muck.

The trucks were dirty, but the racing was clean, with the first big wreck not coming until the 116th lap.

President George H.W. Bush Shaves Head for 2-Year-Old Cancer Patient ? Photo

Former US President George H.W. Bush has just shaved his head to show his support for a 2-year-old boy who?s fighting cancer. A photo of the President and the boy, Patrick, is also attached to this article.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Patrick is the son of a member of Bush?s security detail, for which reason their last name won?t be revealed to the press at their request.

?The young boy, named Patrick, is undergoing treatment for leukemia and has lost his hair. He was diagnosed this spring,? the publication says, citing Bush spokesman Jim McGrath.

?Now they all look the same. It's hard to tell them all apart,? McGrath says of Bush?s ?makeover,? adding that chances are high more photos could be released by the office in the following days.

It was another member of the President?s security team that shaved his head. Bush seems pleased with the result, if the photo attached is any indication.

According to the same McGrath, the President did more than just shave his head: he also donated money to help the boy?s family pay for his expenses. Little Patrick?s prognosis is very good right now.

Nevertheless, a website has been set up to further raise money for the boy?s treatment, so all those interested in helping out can do so at the link included in this paragraph.

?There is a charity motorcycle ride coming up August 10,? McGrath tells the Houston Chronicle.

?Patrick's Pals Motorcycle Benefit Run in Kennebunkport, Maine, will be a 50-mile motorcycle ride through the Maine countryside. A lunch and silent auction will also be held to raise funds for Patrick's expensive treatments,? the publication adds.

In other words, Patrick is getting help from all sides and, thanks to it, the best treatment money can buy. It?s truly an amazing gesture that Bush did, voices online are pointing out.

DARPA's 'Hydra' would be an undersea drone carrier

DARPA

DARPA

DARPA

A timeline of other DARPA undersea technologies, provided as part of a brief on the agency's work in that area.

Unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, are in the news constantly, but what about unmanned underwater vehicles? They could also be important in both war and peace, which is why the Defense Department's research arm, DARPA, is looking into a mobile submarine base from which to launch drones.

The project, still in the earliest stages, is called "Hydra," after the mythical beast whose heads multiplied upon being cut off. The idea is to create a sort of underwater version of an aircraft carrier.

"The rising number of ungoverned states, piracy, and proliferation of sophisticated defenses severely stretches current resources and impacts the nation?s ability to conduct special operations and contingency missions," reads the introduction to the program in a paper issued by DARPA (PDF). "The Hydra program represents a cost-effective way to add undersea capacity that can be tailored to support each mission."

The Hydra, itself an unmanned underwater vehicle, would be stocked with drones of various kinds and capacities, and could travel to wherever it's needed, deploying whatever is needed.

Whether you need a drone circling overhead, scouting underwater for mines, or listening on the surface for pirates or distress calls, the Hydra could have them all ready to launch with the tap of a button.

Of course, there are numerous technological challenges involved with putting something like this together, and the DARPA project is only at the stage where the agency is proposing the general shape of what it wants, and will let defense contractors worry about the details.

The "Proposer's Day" event, at which further details will be announced and initial ideas heard ahead of a broader announcement, will be held at Johns Hopkins University on Aug. 5.

Coach Guardiola experiments as Bayern beat Barca

MUNICH | Wed Jul 24, 2013 7:52pm BST

MUNICH (Reuters) - New coach Pep Guardiola shuffled the cards at Bayern Munich as the treble winners beat his former club Barcelona 2-0 in a friendly on Wednesday.

The Spaniard, who won 14 of 19 possible titles in four years at Barcelona, made sweeping role changes as he works his way into the new job after the Bavarians won the Champions League and domestic league and Cup double last season under Jupp Heynckes.

Against a second-string Barcelona, missing new coach Gerardo Martino and big signing Neymar as well as midfielders Xavi and Andres Iniesta among others, Guardiola started the game without a striker.

Captain Philipp Lahm was pushed forward into an offensive midfield role after years of playing as right back and recent signing and former Barcelona talent Thiago Alcantara moved straight into midfield.

The move paid off in the 15th minute when the diminutive Germany international headed in a smooth Franck Ribery cross.

Bayern, who crushed Barcelona over two legs in the Champions League semi-final last season, were the sharper team in the first half, with their impressive depth in the squad on full display.

With both teams still in pre-season training, both coaches made many changes in the second half with the game losing its pace and edge.

Forward Mario Mandzukic, who came on as a substitute, added another goal late in the game, tapping in from close range.

On Tuesday, Barcelona hired Argentine Gerardo Martino, known as a disciple of the club's possession-based style that Guardiola applied successfully, to replace Tito Vilanova.

Vilanova, 44, stepped down last week to continue treatment for throat cancer after leading Barca to the La Liga title in his first season since taking over from Guardiola.
