Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the drugs with analgesic and antipyretic effects and which have in higher doses, anti-inflammatory effects. These are specifically termed as nonsteroidal to distinguish these drugs from steroids, which have a similar eicosanoid-depressing, anti-inflammatory action.
According to a latest research from Denmark, these commonly used painkiller medications can be helpful against skin cancer. The study found that people who routinely took NSAIDs like Aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen had a lesser chance of developing some forms of skin cancer as compared to those who rarely used these medications.
The researchers came to this conclusion after examining over 18,000 people living in Denmark, that were diagnosed with cancer between the period of 1991 and 2009. Their medical records along with their case histories and medication use were also taken into account and compared to a group of non-cancer patients. The results that came out of the study showed that were was a 15% reduction in squamous cell carcinoma and a 13% drop in melanoma among patients that took NSAIDs.
According to lead researcher, Sigrun Alba Johannesdottir of Aarhus University Hospital, ?Previous studies show that elevated levels of these enzymes are found in skin cancer. Therefore, inhibition of these enzymes may protect against skin cancer development?.
