?The number of workers with elder care responsibilities is on the rise. This trend highlights the need to better understand the impact of family care giving on work, on how working caregivers can better manage their work and care-giving responsibilities.

  • The ?average? U.S. caregiver is a 49-year-old woman who works outside the home and spends nearly 20 hours per week ? the equivalent of another part-time job ? providing unpaid care to her mother for nearly five years.
  • Family caregivers are as likely to be employed as non-caregivers. The majority (74 percent) of adults with elder care responsibilities have worked at a paying job at some point during their care-giving experience.
  • An estimated 61 percent of family caregivers of adults aged 50 or older are currently employed either full-time (50 percent) or part-time (11 percent).

Studies have documented that implementation of elder-care programs can benefit both employers and employees. Elder-care programs improve worker retention, productivity, stress levels, and health among workers.

Vanderbilt Child & Family Center has a number of resources and services to assist you in your care-giving roll:

  • Back-up Care Options ? options for a family caregiver whose normal arrangements are disrupted and/or when you need a break.
  • Boomers, Elders, & More Lunchtime Series ? monthly lunch and learn sessions that discuss topics regarding care giving.
  • Caregiver Support Group ? monthly support group meetings for family caregivers.
  • The One Stop Shop ? a service that provides convenient and efficient resources to those who are family caregivers.
  • Individual Consultation ? one-on-one consultation to assist family caregivers with resources.
  • Elder care Fair ? annual fair that connects caregivers to community agencies.
  • Boomers, Elders, and More E-Newsletter ? a monthly newsletter that provides helpful information regarding events in the community, news highlights, and a caregiver survival tip.
