The 35th annual Salon du livre de Montr?al at Place Bonaventure, the French-language book fair that runs from Wednesday to Monday, Nov. 19, will highlight the writings of Quebec?s political class.
From essays on Quebec?s past to today?s corruption-and-carr? rouge present to tomorrow?s future of hopeful change, writers young and old get their kick at history?s proverbial can.
Former premier Lucien Bouchard?s Lettres ? un jeune politicien (VLB ?diteur), and Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois?s epilogue in the book Le souffle de la Jeunesse (Ecosoci?t?) are the unlikely bookends of this onslaught of political writing on the issues of Quebec.
Jean Cournoyer and Claude Castonguay, two former MNAs and ministers under Robert Bourassa, will be on hand talking about their new books. Cournoyer?s Dans le feu de l?action (Les ?ditions de l?Homme) examines his personal and professional journey. His autobiography relates the great changes Quebec went through in the ?60s and ?70s.
Castonguay, one of the pioneers of socialized medicine in Quebec, writes in his book Sant?, l?heure du choix (Bor?al), that Quebec?s health-care system is at a crossroads, and hard choices have to be made.
Among other politicos sharing the salon stage will be Djemila Benhabib, Jean-Fran?ois Lis?e, Monique J?r?me-Forget and Fran?oise David.
Author Georges-H?bert Germain is back as the honorary president of the Salon du livre de Montr?al. Last year was the first year of his three-year stint as president.
This year?s theme at the salon is Les auteurs en t?te d?affiche (The authors get top billing). ?We?ve decided to put the focus on them. There will be many meetings, panel discussions and interviews,? Germain said.
?I think it?s important, because writers lead a solitary life, talking to themselves or to their computers.?
The salon will not only be about politics. It runs the gamut from ?chick-lit? to inspirational, thrillers to the latest cookbooks.
Quebec writer India Desjardins, whose shed her seminal character Aur?lie Laflamme and teen writing, matures with C?libataire, a BD (graphic novel) she co-authored with Magalie Foutrier. Desjardins explores singlehood and wonders if it?s as great as it?s cracked up to be.
Former Quebec actress Johanne Fontaine brings to the salon her refreshing book Hop la vie! Tant qu?il y a de la vie il y a de l?espoir (Performance ?dition). Fontaine, given a diagnosis of terminal cancer in March 2010, shares the tricks, philosophy and techniques she has used to overcome the toughest of hardships.
Thriller readers will be well-served at the salon as Kathy Reichs, Louise Penny, and Patricia MacDonald are slated to sign books for their fans.
Artists who have been the subject of biographies this year will also be on hand ? from musicians Alain Lef?vre, Simple Plan, singer Louise Forestier and Jean-Pierre Ferland to TV host extraordinaire Normand Brathwaite.
On the culinary side, Normand Laprise?s first book Toqu?, les artisans d?une gastronomie qu?b?coise, about Laprise?s legendary eatery, is the book du jour. Other modern-day Escoffiers on hand will be Ricardo Larriv?e, Joe Beef?s David McMillan and Fr?d?ric Morin, J?r?me Ferrer, Daniel V?zina and more.
