FOOTBALL Farmingtons Gourdine eyeing a win in MHSFCA All-Star Game

Farmington HS's Page All Football Stories The MHSFCA East-West All-Star Football Game this Saturday will host some of the top performers in the state of Michigan. One of those players will be former safety Isaiah Gourdine of Farmington High School.

As excited as any football player would be, Gourdine said he wants to show people that he can play safety.

?Yes, I?m very excited,? he said. ?I want to prove to myself even more than I tried to during the regular season.?

Gourdine says he has a lot to prove, especially to a future teammate in tight end Hunter Folkertsma. Both players will be joining the Bowling Green State University football team for the 2013 fall.

?I definitely want to show him that I?m capable of being a good safety,? Gourdine said. ?Show him a little bit of what I can do before we go to camp.?

Aside of showing all his worthiness as a safety, Gourdine wants the ultimate prize of the game ? even though the game is an exhibition game.

?First thing is I want my team to win,? he said. ?I definitely want my team to win. A couple selfish things I want is an interception for a touchdown and a couple tackles ? a couple big hits.?

During the week of practices, Gourdine will be going up against the East squad. The viewers won?t be able to see his performance during practice, but the competition will still be the same as to what he will see during the game.

?Yeah, we?ve been practicing three times a day,? Gourdine said. ?We?ve been practicing a lot.?

Most fans want their children to win, but to do it in front of a crowd of people that are new to you is something most unique about a game of this caliber. Gourdine mentioned that he expects his former head coach John Bechtel to be in attendance, along with his parents, his nephew and some friends from high school.

Gourdine?s family means a lot to him and it?s one of the factors that led to his decision to commit to the Falcons.

?I sat down with my family and we wanted to lay out all our options and Bowling Green was basically the best fit for me,? he said. ?That?s how I made my decision.?

Before Bowling Green, Gourdine was a commit to Cincinnati. Personal reasons caused him to think otherwise of the school. He wanted a place where he felt close to the team ? like a family.

?I de-committed from Cincinnati because the coaches never called me,? Gourdine said.

Gourdine also wants to win at the college level, but a bowl game was never a huge factor in his second decision.

?There?s not like a big difference ? Cincinnati goes to a BCS bowl and Bowling Green is really not,? he said. ?That?s the only difference I see, basically.?

The decision process didn?t take long for the young safety once he de-committed from Cincinnati.

?At first I committed to Cincinnati, but once I de-committed I basically knew I wanted to go to Bowling Green because they were my first offer,? he said. ?They?ve been offering me since day one. They never really lied to me about anything, so I basically knew that was the school I wanted to go to.?

Gourdine didn?t get to meet with Bowling Green until his sophomore year when he went to one of their summer camps. It wasn?t until he was heading into his senior year that the Falcons decided to offer him a scholarship.

Gourdine worked as hard as any other football player at Farmington high school, but his favorite part about those days will be hanging with the guys. Most players love the friendships they made through football. Gourdine is not any different.

?Just being around all the football players and just hanging out playing football,? Gourdine said. ?That?s the best part.?
