Deneeta Pope, Paul Ryan Ex-Girlfriend, Wishes V.P. Hopeful Well Despite Political Differences

Deneeta Pope, the African-American ex-girlfriend of Republican V.P. nominee Paul Ryan, wants nothing to do with the upcoming Presidential election.

She's also a Barack Obama supporter, though she wishes Ryan well.

Ryan mentioned in an interview years ago that he's experienced racism in part because he has a black sister-in-law as well as a black ex-girlfriend.

This came up again recently after some of Ryan's policies have been criticized - fairly or otherwise - as detrimental to the African-American community.

Deneeta Pope has since been ID'd ... and wishes she hadn't been.

Pope said yesterday, a day after Paul Ryan's acceptance speech at the RNC, "I'm not interested in talking. I don't know why everyone is calling."

"I'm newly married and would just like to be left alone."

Deneeta did speak briefly on the newly-minted V.P. hopeful, though, telling the Daily Mail that while she remains an ardent Barack Obama backer, she can't help but cheer for the #2 man on the GOP 2012 ticket at the same time.

Pope, 40, said, "I am indeed a Democrat. That’s no secret. But although I have a different political association to Paul, I support him and wish him success."

"Paul is a very nice guy, a kind guy and a family guy."

Daneeta says that she remains in touch with the Wisconsin Congressman; Paul and his wife, Janna Ryan, were even invited to Pope's wedding in May.

Wonder if she has a Paul Ryan shirtless pic or two of her own.

I love to design new cat hotels, dog beds and pet toys in my head but I never seem to implement any of my ideas. While searching for some pet solutions that won?t turn my house into a primary color mess, I bookmarked a few things to share.

Why is it that widely available children and pet toys and necessities just don?t seem to have much style? Has anyone else found a great source for outfitting our furry friends with panache? Please share.

I know I?ve included a couple of colorful toys here, but in the right home they?ll fit right in. Modern furniture, white walls and neutral floors can handle a little color. It?s probably best to stick with just one though. Color, that is. If your home is already colorful, try to keep with natural colors and textures so they will blend in and not steal attention from your decor.

1. Tug and Toss Dog Toy at Patina Stores. I love this tomato red right now! I think it?s just the right color to celebrate the last few days of color and if your into seasonal decorating, it could lead you right into fall.

2. Anderson Unleashed Life Dining Dog Bowls at Modern Tails. So pretty, you?d almost want to use that canister for cookies instead of dog treats.

3. Coco the Elephant at Jax and Bones. Is this guy cute? I?m not sure, but I really like him and of course he?s grey so that?s always a plus.

4. Mazee ? Perplexus for Dogs at Think Geek. I?m pretty sure I?m going to buy this soon. Parting with $16 for puppy entertainment is a no brainer. Eddie (the one-year-old who thinks he?s still a little puppy) has a crazy run around energy fest around 8:00 every night. Just when I?m ready to wind down, or try anyway.

5. Felted Cat Bed at elevele. My cat would love this! And it looks so much better than the cardboard box lid he adopted and napped in for months. I just couldn?t bring myself to take it away.

6. fishhotel by Umbra. We?re not much of a fish family (for pets anyway) but this fish hotel is great. They stack, you could have a whole apartment complex of fish residents. So cool!

7. Wiltshire Pet Bed at Modern Tails. Simple, but sweet and geometrics never get old (well some do). This bed could easily live in a traditional or eclectic home.

8. BowHaus Modern Dog Furniture from Denhaus. I?ve been eyeing this for years it seems (not sure if it?s been out for years, but maybe). I think this would make a perfect side table for my side of the sofa. Although I haven?t figured out if Eddie or Jersey (the cat) would end up winning the battle and making this their new home.

Jon Jones reportedly asked Dana White to tell Chael Sonnen to stop calling him out

Before UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones turned down a fight with Chael Sonnen, the two engaged in a war of words. Sonnen called Jones out, Jones responded with, "If you're going to disrespect me out of nowhere, at least disrespect me to my face like a man. And you call me a punk, I'm more man than you'll ever be," and then Jones said he knew what he was doing all along.

Except, there are reports now that Jones was bothered by Sonnen not only calling out Jones here, but in the many things Sonnen said after Jones turned down their fights. He even reportedly asked UFC president Dana White to tell Sonnen to stop.

This isn't the first time Jones has been oddly bothered by what people have to say about him. After beating Quinton Jackson at UFC 135, the UFC brought Rashad Evans into the cage for the two to face off for their next fight. Jones was so bothered by the sight of his former friend in the cage that he ignored Evans' compliments on how he fought, and said Evans "ruined his night twice." Really? Jones had just beaten a former champion by submission, but the mere sight of Evans ruined what should have been a jubilant evening for him.

When Jones apologized for getting behind the wheel of a car while drunk, he lashed out again at his "haters" who tried to "kick him while he was down." After White announced the cancellation of UFC 151 and lashed out against Jones and his camp, Jones actually unfollowed his boss on Twitter.

For a millionaire professional athlete, Jones has a thin skin. He often appears more concerned with what his detractors think than his supporters.

It's an odd stance for someone of his level to take, because part of the job of being a famous athlete is dealing with people who don't like you. Look at the mentions of Twitter pages or Facebook pages for any pro athlete. They are being blamed for everything from fantasy team losses to ruining a fan's life. San Francisco 49er Kyle Williams received death threats after fumbling in a playoff game. It's not right that anyone should have to deal with such vitriol, but it's part of the fame game.

Jones has the skills, speed, reach, height and fight intelligence to stay at the top of the MMA world for a long, long time. He appears so far above his competition that the only person who can beat him is Jon Jones. Right now, he should be thinking about his fight with Vitor Belfort on Sept. 22, not be worried about what Sonnen has to say.

Census: More Kansans lack health insurance - KansasCity.com

Ask Susette Schwartz whether she?s surprised by a new report that shows thousands more Kansans going without health insurance, and she sighs.

?Well, no,? said Schwartz, CEO of Hunter Health Clinic in Wichita, a safety net clinic that serves uninsured and underinsured people as well as those with insurance.?It?s just horrendous,? she said. ?Our number of patients has gone up, and keeps going up, and we just can?t keep doing this.?The U.S. Census Bureau on Wednesday released estimates of health insurance coverage for every state and each of the nation?s nearly 3,200 counties.The report showed that more than 380,000 Kansas residents under age 65 ? about 15.8?percent of that age group ? did not have health insurance in 2010, up from 14.6?percent the previous year.For Wichita, the report was even more grim. More than 17?percent of Sedgwick County residents under 65 ? nearly 75,000 ? did not have health insurance in 2010, the latest year data is available. That?s 10,000 more uninsured people than the previous year and nearly 30,000 more than 2005, according to the report.?I think we all know, with the economic downturn, that a lot of folks that did have employment are now unemployed or underemployed,? said Dave Sanford, CEO of GraceMed, another network of safety net clinics.?We saw our demand increase several years ago, and it really hasn?t stopped,? he said. ?One of the challenges we have is continuing to keep up with the demand for care.?Since 2005, the census report has broken down the statewide estimates by age groups, gender, race and Hispanic origin. For the first time this year, the report estimates health coverage at the county level for those in the 50 to 64 age group.That inclusion ?allows tracking ? of this population, which is more likely to consume health care compared with younger age groups,? the report said.Statewide in 2010, about 60,800 people ages 50 to 64 ? 11.4?percent ? did not have health insurance.Local numbers mirrored the state: In Sedgwick County, about 12?percent of 50- to 64-year-olds did not have coverage in 2010; in Butler County, about 10?percent; and in Harvey County, about 11?percent.The estimates are based on statistical models combining data from a variety of sources, including the American Community Survey, Census Bureau population estimates, federal tax returns, Medicaid participation records and 2000 Census statistics.For Schwartz, the Hunter Health Clinic executive, all those numbers add up to more people at the clinic?s five sites in Wichita. Last year, Hunter Health served about 36,000 people with about 84,000 patient visits, she said. This year, the number of patients is more than 41,000.About 70 percent of those patients are uninsured, Schwartz said.?We?re still doing everything we?ve always done,? she said. ?We?re just running out of resources, that?s the bottom line.?Should President Obama?s national health care law go into effect ? particularly a portion that would expand the Medicaid program for low-income Americans ? about 20,000 of Hunter Health Clinic?s patients would have insurance, Schwartz said.More importantly, she said, those patients likely would get more regular and preventive care that could keep them out of more costly emergency rooms.?When we have this many people uninsured, we?re not saving money, we?re spending it,? Schwartz said. ?If they?re not getting the prevention they need, they?re going to be in the hospitals, and that is so much more expensive.?About a year ago, GraceMed acquired the Mother Mary Anne Clinic, an after-hours urgent care clinic for the uninsured and underinsured launched by Via Christi in 2008. The expansion allowed GraceMed to provide immediate care to more patients, as well as helping them deal with chronic conditions and receive follow-up care, Sanford said.A project of the United Methodist Church, GraceMed also operates clinics at some Wichita public schools that provide low-cost medical and dental care on a sliding scale. Sanford said the longest wait times these days are for dental care.?We secured one new dentist since last year, but whenever we have a new provider, word gets out and the demand gets that much more,? he said.Schwartz, the Hunter Health executive, said Wednesday?s report from the Census Bureau illustrates a growing need for low- and no-cost health care, a demand she expects will keep going up along with the number of uninsured residents.?We?ll just continue to do everything we can, but gosh, it?s hard.?

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? They're the political world's newest odd couple: Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are bound by substance, but differ dramatically in style.

The running mates share a love of policy, and a fascination with the world's economy and America's place in it. But where Romney is buttoned-up and reserved on the campaign trail, Ryan is relaxed and exudes a natural enthusiasm.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who once supported abortion rights and more liberal gay policies, has struggled to convince some Republicans of his conservative credentials. Ryan, the architect of an austere congressional budget blueprint, is a hero of the right.

As Ryan prepared to address the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night, the looming question was whether he'd steal the spotlight from Romney, who speaks Thursday.

So far, Romney has tried to share in his running mate's appeal rather than seek to outshine him. His campaign pared back plans for them to campaign separately in the run-up to the Tampa convention and instead scheduled more joint events.

Appearing together, Romney and Ryan drew crowds of up to 7,000 people, dwarfing Romney's largest solo event last week ? a speech to 1,600 at a manufacturing facility in Bettendorf, Iowa. And Romney, who is often restrained and cautious in the public eye, is clearly more ebullient and relaxed alongside Ryan, who campaign aides have dubbed "the partner."

"I am so happy! I am so happy to have my teammate now," Romney told cheering supporters during one of their first rallies together in Mooresville, N.C.

Ryan, for his part, said he had expected the demands of the campaign to be draining but instead "it's more energizing."

The 42-year-old Ryan has an obvious comfort on the campaign trail that Romney does not. He wears cowboy boots, skips up stairs two at a time and makes frequent sports references, including shout-outs to his beloved Green Bay Packers.

He also likes to poke fun at himself.

"We do cow-milking contests in Wisconsin," he told supporters at the Iowa State Fair earlier this month. "I usually lose to a 17-year-old woman, who grew up on a dairy farm, who's wearing like a sash and tiara."

There also is evidence of Ryan's active lifestyle wherever he goes. A former personal trainer, he works out at his hotel gym almost every morning. And he sprinkles his campaign speeches with mentions of hunting, skiing and hiking.

Romney struggled to connect with gun rights' advocates, for example, at one point saying he hunts "small varmints." Ryan, on the other hand, did an interview for Deer and Deer Hunting's October issue, telling the magazine that one of his goals is to hunt sheep with a bow.

"I don't know if I'll ever be able to try, but one of my goals is to get a grand slam of sheep with a bow," Ryan told the magazine. "It would be very tough and very expensive. But I'd love to do some of those great western hunts for sheep and deer."

Romney shares few personal stories in his campaign speeches and his interactions with voters are more measured. His most animated moments in front of a crowd often involve little more than a wave and a smile.

Despite their different personalities, Romney and Ryan both are data-driven thinkers who see themselves as problem-solvers ? and good ones at that. They view Romney's work in the private sector and Ryan's congressional budget expertise as complementary experiences that would serve them well in the White House.

Romney aides say they always expected Ryan to be a popular choice. And they dismiss the notion that having an attention-grabbing running mate could be problematic for the campaign.

"When they're together, the energy they create with voters is very apparent," said Kevin Madden, a Romney adviser. "They have a great rapport together that really helps as we travel from one event to the next and from one state to another."

Still, the campaign is well aware of the problems that cropped up when past running mates garnered too much attention or were trusted prematurely to play a prominent role in the campaign. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin infused John McCain's campaign with energy in 2008, but proved to be more of a distraction than an asset.

Charlie Black, a senior adviser to McCain's campaign, said he doesn't expect Ryan's popularity to become a liability for the Republican ticket.

"It's not a problem if the person stays on message," said Black, now an informal Romney adviser. "And Paul Ryan is going to stay on message."

Even as Romney seeks to benefit from Ryan's spotlight, he is distancing himself from some of his running mate's most controversial policy proposals. Embracing those positions could boost Romney's standing with conservatives, but also turn off more moderate voters.

Romney has repeatedly said the ticket was running on his budget proposals, not the budget Ryan crafted that calls for slashing spending and overhauling Medicare, the popular federal program for seniors. On abortion, the campaign says a Romney administration would not oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest, while Ryan opposes it in those situations.

Democrats, however, are doing their best to make Ryan ? and his controversial budget proposals ? the center of attention. President Barack Obama points to Ryan as the Republican party's "ideological leader." His campaign, in a play for seniors and middle-class voters, is running ads casting Ryan's proposals for overhauling Medicare and drastically cutting other social programs as outside the mainstream.

Democrats also have rebranded Ryan's budget the "Romney-Ryan" plan. They're also using Ryan's views on abortion to link the GOP ticket to Todd Akin, the Republican Senate candidate in Missouri who said women's bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of "legitimate rape."

US economy grew at 1.7 percent rate in 2nd quarter

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. economy grew at a 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, boosted by slightly stronger consumer spending and greater exports.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that growth was marginally better than its initial estimate of 1.5 percent.

Economists expect some improvement in growth in the second half of the year after seeing more positive data in July. But most believe the economy will keep growing at a subpar rate of around 2 percent.

Growth at or below 2 percent is not enough to lower the unemployment rate, which was 8.3 percent in July. Most expect the unemployment rate to stay above 8 percent for the rest of this year.

A weak economy and high unemployment could hurt President Barack Obama re-election chances and bolster Republican candidate Mitt Romney's campaign.

The report on economic growth measures the gross domestic output, the country's total output of goods and services. It measures everything from the purchase of restaurant meals to construction of highways and bridges. The report Wednesday was the government's second look at GDP for the spring quarter. There will be a third and final estimate of second quarter GDP released next month.

The third quarter began with some promise.

Employers created 163,000 jobs in July, the most since February. Also in July, consumers stepped up retail spending, factories produced more goods and the housing recovery continued with increases in both new and previously occupied homes.

The upward revision to second-quarter growth was largely because consumers spent at a slightly faster pace than first estimated. Consumer spending grew a 1.7 percent rate, better than the 1.5 percent initial estimated. Exports, which add to growth, were also stronger, growing at a 6 percent rate.

Government spending, which has been a drag on growth for the past two years, contracted again in the second quarter. But the decline at an annual rate of 0.9 percent was less than the initial estimated drop of 1.4 percent. That reflected a much smaller dip in defense spending than first estimated.

All of the changes boosted economic output by $6.5 billion more than previously estimated, leaving total GDP at $13.56 trillion, after adjusting for inflation, in the second quarter.

Endangered Tiger Cubs Caught on Camera Near Proposed Dam

Two endangered tiger cubs and their mother have been caught on film in Thailand near the site of a proposed hydroelectric dam.

The black-and-white footage, taken in May, shows a mother tiger investigating a camera trap near the Mae Wong River. After a moment, her two cubs bound through the woods after her.

The tigers are three of the fewer than 300 wild Indochinese tigers left in Thailand, according to the WWF, which released the video of the cubs and mama tiger, along with the Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.

Panthera tigris corbetti is an endangered subspecies of tiger found only in southeast Asia. Conservation agencies estimate that there are fewer than 1,500 in the wild today, with Thailand hosting a few hundred. According to the advocacy group Tigers in Crisis, one Indochinese tiger is lost to poachers each week, on average. The big cats are also threatened by shrinking habitats and loss of prey. Now, environmental groups are crying out against a proposed $400 million dam project on the Mae Wong River. The dam would inundate more than 5,000 acres (2,023 hectares) of land in Mae Wong National Park. The dam, and others planned along with it, would also cut the region's fish supply by 16 percent, according to a study released Monday (Aug. 27) by WWF and the Australian National University. That food supply would have to be replaced by agriculture, according to the report published in the journal Global Environmental Change.

The WWF and other conservation agencies worry that the dam project would also bring new roads into tigers' forest habitat. Those roads, in turn, may bring more poachers into the region.

"The good news is that the footage tells us our tiger conservation efforts are on the right track and that this area is succeeding in helping wild tigers reproduce," Rebecca Ng of WWF's Greater Mekong program said in a statement. "If the dam is built, it will literally wash away years of conservation efforts and risks the future of tigers in Thailand."

The Thai government says that the project will help ease problems of drought and flooding in the region, according to the Bangkok Post. Environmental groups are taking the issue to court, filing a complaint with the country's Central Administrative Court alleging that the prime minister and cabinet violated the constitution by approving the Mae Wong dam before environmental impact studies were completed.

You can always count on Japan's NHK to come up with new, exciting and innovative ways to bring us video coverage. The latest project? A wind- and solar-powered robot camera designed for situations such as natural disasters. Loaded with a 1,200 Ah battery, even if the elements don't bless it with sun and air, it can keep filming for two to three days. The combination of wind turbine and solar panels obviously allow it to generate more power than either method on its own, with the turbine reportedly generating 1 kW at 11 m/s wind speeds. A special power-saving mode prevent it draining too fast when full functionality -- such as the built-in wireless, cellular and satellite broadcasting systems aren't needed. Currently the prototype is installed on a rooftop while battery and power-generation are fully tested, but it's hoped that this could lead to further developments for disaster area broadcast equipment. Or -- here's hoping -- power-cut-proof sports coverage.
