"Nonprofit organizations are vital to many rural communities. They draw on local talent and energy to advance education, the arts, economic development, and other interests," stated Alexander. ?Obtaining federal recognition as a tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) organization multiplies funding opportunities and makes contributions tax deductible.? Creating and maintaining a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) requires compliance with both state and federal law.? This presentation should be helpful both for those already active in an existing nonprofit and those thinking about forming one. It will cover both Nebraska and federal legal requirements for nonprofit corporations and tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations."
The second program, "LLC or S corporation: What's the Difference?" will be held on Friday from 8:00 a.m. running until 10:00 a.m.
This presentation will inform participants about limited liability companies (LLCs) and S corporations (S corps), the two most popular forms for microenterprises. ?You will learn about the legal formalities to create and maintain LLCs and S corps and the practical pros and cons of each.? The workshop will also address potential pitfalls for microentrepreneurs that can be avoided by good planning at the beginning of the business,? continued Alexander.
Both clinics will be held at the St. Paul Public Library Community Room at 1301 Howard Ave, St. Paul, NE.? Current business owners, individuals considering starting a business or nonprofit, bankers, accountants, attorneys, service providers and other interested parties are encouraged to attend. The clinics are free and open to the public.
?I appreciate the opportunity to speak with people interested in nonprofit organizations and small businesses in the St. Paul area, said Alexander. ?The Community Economic Development Clinic is a program of Creighton Law School that represents microentrepreneurs and community nonprofits across Nebraska and western Iowa.? Creighton is particularly interested in serving rural and small town clients.?
"REAP is thrilled to work with local entities to bring this information to the region," said Monica Braun, REAP Women's Business Center Director at the Center for Rural Affairs. "Creighton School of Law is a good partner to the Rural Enterprise Assistance Program and works hard to educate business owners on legal structures and other legal issues affecting their businesses."
